At DIC Sunday School (DSS), we aim to create a competitive environment for school-age children to have basic knowledge of Islam. The program is meant to foster a strong Muslim identity through spiritual and academic development and training. It was designed to help nurture an intrinsic motivation within the student to learn the basics of their religion, to build a strong moral character within them, and to obtain a deeper awareness of God in and throughout their lives.
DSS offers a Sunday Islamic school program that consists of three components:
(1) Quran Reading & Memorization
The objective of this component is to provide the students the ability to read the Quran and recite it properly. Students will then learn how to effectively memorize the Quran. Our vision is to provide children with the best resources, teachers, and environment by which they can learn to read, memorize, and understand the Quran. Students will gain confidence and fluency in reading the Quran as well as learn oft-repeated vocabulary and familiarize themselves with the basic message of the text. Student coursework will be based upon “A Student’s First Guide to Juz ‘Amma,” by Yahya Emerick.
(2) Islamic Studies
The objective of this component is to create a competitive and nurturing environment for students to learn the essentials of Islam through the study of select parts of the Quran and the Sunnah. Student coursework for Islamic Studies will be based upon the “I Love Islam,” “Learning Islam,” and “Living Islam” textbook series & supplemental material. In addition the program is designed to teach students the authentic ahadeeth of our beloved Prophet as well as the daily adkhaar and du`as narrated from the Sunnah.
(3) Arabic
The objective of this component is to create a competitive and nurturing environment to learn the essentials of the Arabic language in speech, reading, & writing. Beginner students will focus on basic Arabic language recognition, pronunciation, and writing capabilities. Student coursework for beginners will be based upon the Noorani Qa`ida textbook and supplemental material. Advanced Student coursework for Arabic studies will be based upon the “Iqra Arabic Reader” series.
